CHAPTER 22

Corporations

I open the door to Fani's house with extra care. Everyone must be sleeping at this late hour, except for Daniel. I hope he’s awake so we can talk.

The pale orange glow that comes from the floor lamp tucked in the opposite corner is not enough for me to be sure I won’t stumble on anything that would make unwanted noise. I long for the days long past when I had the eyesight of a feline. I got old.

Daniel’s leg is the only visible thing through the cracked living room door. I go in and kick it. Daniel jumps, taking his hand to the back of his jeans. He relaxes as soon as he lays eyes on me.

“Do you want to get shot?” he asks.

“Not particularly.” I let myself fall on the leather couch opposite him. I’m finally in a place where I can rest, but Daniel fixes me with a raised eyebrow. “What?”

“Why aren’t you upstairs?”

“I don’t want to wake Ilse up,” I mumble.

He’s not convinced. “Since when?”

Tension gathers on the back of my head. I don’t know what to tell Daniel; hell, I don’t even know what to tell myself. While I believe Philip’s version of events, Ilse still lied to me. I don’t want to deal with that now, when I have a killer to catch.

“Philip Noble is not the killer,” I say. “Dr. Carter tested his blood—he’s as violence-impaired as most of the world’s population.”

“Is this what makes you upset? That Philip Noble is not the killer, or that this increases the chances that the General is?”

“Neither.”

He eyeballs me but eventually concedes. “Fine. If it’s not related to the case, I can wait until you’re ready to tell me.”

That’s my friend—maybe the main reason why he’s still my best friend. He doesn’t push to get personal information because he doesn’t believe he’s entitled to know everything that goes on in my life. I will talk to him after this mess is over.

A buzz in my ear alerts me I have incoming audio. Daniel frowns as I check my pen. I mouth ‘Lyssa’ then answer.

“This is an odd time to call,” I say.

“I know. I didn’t think you’re sleeping, so I decided to take my chance. Were you? Sleeping?”

“No. What’s wrong?”

“We need to talk. I’m outside Fani’s house.”

I jump at the opportunity for what could be a long discussion that will give me an excuse to avoid Ilse. But joy isn’t what brought Lyssa to my door. Her eyes are swollen and reddish.

“What’s the emergency?” I ask.

She steps into the living room in silence and startles when she lays her eyes on Daniel. “It’s not an emergency. I wanted to talk to you alone, without Jaren or other people prying.”

Daniel laughs but gathers himself off the couch nonetheless. “I get the hint. It’s time I slept anyway.”

“Did you talk with your father?” I ask as soon as we’re alone. I see no point for pleasantries so late in the night.

“Yes, we had dinner together, followed by a long conversation.
