CHAPTER 22
Corporations
I open the door to Fani's house with extra care. Everyone must be sleeping at this late hour, except for Daniel. I hope heâs awake so we can talk.
The pale orange glow that comes from the floor lamp tucked in the opposite corner is not enough for me to be sure I wonât stumble on anything that would make unwanted noise. I long for the days long past when I had the eyesight of a feline. I got old.
Danielâs leg is the only visible thing through the cracked living room door. I go in and kick it. Daniel jumps, taking his hand to the back of his jeans. He relaxes as soon as he lays eyes on me.
âDo you want to get shot?â he asks.
âNot particularly.â I let myself fall on the leather couch opposite him. Iâm finally in a place where I can rest, but Daniel fixes me with a raised eyebrow. âWhat?â
âWhy arenât you upstairs?â
âI donât want to wake Ilse up,â I mumble.
Heâs not convinced. âSince when?â
Tension gathers on the back of my head. I donât know what to tell Daniel; hell, I donât even know what to tell myself. While I believe Philipâs version of events, Ilse still lied to me. I donât want to deal with that now, when I have a killer to catch.
âPhilip Noble is not the killer,â I say. âDr. Carter tested his bloodâheâs as violence-impaired as most of the worldâs population.â
âIs this what makes you upset? That Philip Noble is not the killer, or that this increases the chances that the General is?â
âNeither.â
He eyeballs me but eventually concedes. âFine. If itâs not related to the case, I can wait until youâre ready to tell me.â
Thatâs my friendâmaybe the main reason why heâs still my best friend. He doesnât push to get personal information because he doesnât believe heâs entitled to know everything that goes on in my life. I will talk to him after this mess is over.
A buzz in my ear alerts me I have incoming audio. Daniel frowns as I check my pen. I mouth âLyssaâ then answer.
âThis is an odd time to call,â I say.
âI know. I didnât think youâre sleeping, so I decided to take my chance. Were you? Sleeping?â
âNo. Whatâs wrong?â
âWe need to talk. Iâm outside Faniâs house.â
I jump at the opportunity for what could be a long discussion that will give me an excuse to avoid Ilse. But joy isnât what brought Lyssa to my door. Her eyes are swollen and reddish.
âWhatâs the emergency?â I ask.
She steps into the living room in silence and startles when she lays her eyes on Daniel. âItâs not an emergency. I wanted to talk to you alone, without Jaren or other people prying.â
Daniel laughs but gathers himself off the couch nonetheless. âI get the hint. Itâs time I slept anyway.â
âDid you talk with your father?â I ask as soon as weâre alone. I see no point for pleasantries so late in the night.
âYes, we had dinner together, followed by a long conversation.
